Obituary of Elsa H. Grimmer

Elsa H. Grimmer, 86, of Winfield, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Sunrise Terrace in Winfield.  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019, at the Winfield United Methodist Church.  Immediately following the services, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Sunrise Terrace Care Center, Winfield United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.  The Honts Funeral Home of Winfield is caring for Elsa’s family and her arrangements.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com

Elsa H. Schmidt was born on April 16, 1933, in Belmond, Iowa the daughter of Andreas and Bodil (Jorgensen) Schmidt.  She was a 1954 graduate of Iowa State University, graduating with honors and a B.A. in English and Home Economics.  On January 30, 1955, Elsa was united in marriage to Edward D. Grimmer in Winfield.  Elsa served for many years as the President, CEO and Owner of Schmidt Construction Company in Winfield.  She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church where she taught Adult Sunday School and served in the Women’s Circle.  Elsa also served on the Sunrise Terrace Care Center Board and the Winfield School Board.  She enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, sewing, antiquing, going to the theatre, playing Bridge and spending time with her family, but most of all she loved to travel with her husband.

Elsa will be deeply missed by her children, Helene (Theodore) Hermann of Winfield, David Grimmer of Edmonds, Washington and Andrew Grimmer of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Megan Carberry, Emily Grimmer, Edward Grimmer and Phoebe Grimmer and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.  

Elsa was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and daughter-in-law, Lynda Grimmer.
