Obituary of Barbara Ellen Sands

Barbara Ellen Sands, age 89, of Morning Sun died Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Morning Sun Care Center. The daughter of Carl and H. Leona (Foor) Schneider of Wapello, Barbara was born May 1st, 1930 in rural Wapello. She was a 1947 graduate of Wapello High School. On February 20th, 1949 she married Dick M. Sands. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2008.

 

She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Morning Sun, the American Legion Auxiliary and charter member of the Morning Sun Lioness Club.  Barbara raised four children and enjoyed driving a school bus for the Morning Sun School District. She was a Scout leader and Sunday School teacher for many years. She also enjoyed golfing, crocheting and playing cards.

 

She loved attending activities for her grandchildren and spending time with her great-grandchildren. Barbara was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed many visits to Busch Stadium to cheer on her favorite team. A highlight was attending a World Series game.

 

Survivors include: one daughter-in-law, Jamie Sands of Wapello; three daughters, Betsy Davis of East Moline, Illinois; Carla (Dan) Weber of Mediapolis, Judy Sands of Morning Sun; seven grandchildren, Jeff ( Mikki) Sands, Wendee (Jason) Chase, Jason ( Leslie) Weber, Luke Davis, Cara (Trey) Hammond, Brian (Laci) Weber, Bethany (Trent) Hepler; ten great-grandchildren, Emma, Colby, Cami, Ryan, Danica, Lillian, Kellen, Mara, Jackson and Lyla; one brother, L. Richard “Dickie” (Kay) Schneider of Burlington; one brother-in-law, Dale Petersen of Mediapolis; three sister-in-law’s, Marcia (Jack) Gustison of Wapello, Kathleen Sands of Columbus Junction, Rita Chaney of Columbus Junction; many nieces and nephews and dear friends, Zelda Garretson and Beth Marie Martin.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Danny; son-in-law, Fran; her parents; three sisters, Betty Gerst, Jeanne Strawhacker and Evelyn Petersen and four brothers, Daniel “Pete”, Phil, Doug and Mike Schneider.

 

Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2019 at the Morning Sun Centenary United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

 

The funeral ceremony for Barbara Sands will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Morning Sun Centenary United Methodist Church, with Rev. Carl Benge officiating. Interment will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at in the church fellowship hall.   

 

In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the Morning Sun Centenary United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.
