Obituary of Norma Jean Hartley

Norma Jean Hartley, 84 of Lone Tree, died Friday, September 1, 2017, at her daughter’s home with her family by her side.  Funeral Mass for Norma will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree.  Rev. Michael Spiekermeier and Carol Kaalberg, Cluster Coordinator will preside.  Immediately following the Funeral Mass, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion.  Graveside committal services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday, September 4, 2017 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree, 7:00 p.m. rosary at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice in memory of Norma.  Online condolences for the family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

 

Norma Jean Howell was born January 11, 1933 in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Harry Lloyd and Myrtle Leona (Haney) Howell.  Norma was a graduate of St. Mathias Catholic School in Muscatine.  On March 15, 1952, Norma was united in marriage to Luther (Lute) Hartley at the St. Mathias Rectory in Muscatine.  Norma had worked as a Doppler technician for the University of Iowa.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Lone Tree, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society.  She was a past member of The Moose in Muscatine and the Lone Tree American Legion Auxiliary.  Norma enjoyed playing softball and basketball, as well as going camping, fishing, bowling, looking for shells on the beach, traveling, yard work and playing cards.  Her greatest love was the time she spent with her family.

 

Norma will be deeply missed by her children, Donald Hartley and his wife, Deb of Lone Tree, Linda Hartley and special friend, Bobby Doerres of Muscatine, Cindy Kannegieter and her husband, Steve of Waterloo, Nancy Ford and her husband, Jerry of Lone Tree, Irene Waltz and her husband Randy of Conesville, Mary Wood and her husband, Doug of Navarre, Florida and Diana Feldman and her special friend, Marty Fellows of Lone Tree; 18 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Harold “Dixie” Gene Howell of Muscatine and Roger Elwood Howell of Muscatine and one sister, Mary Ann Liddy of Hickory, N.C.

 

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lute on July 6, 2001 and brothers, Bob, Jerry Wayne and Don Howell.
