Obituary of Jerold "Gary" R. Smothers

Jerold R. Smothers, 84, of Lone Tree, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at his home in Lone Tree.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery with military rites by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457.  Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the United Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree.  Online condolences for the Smothers family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Jerold Reuben Smothers was born on October 29, 1933, in Sigourney, Iowa the son of William Thomas and Henrietta Etta (Buehneman) Smothers.  Gary was a 1952 graduate of Lone Tree High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.  On December 21, 1952, Gary was united in marriage to Shirley A. Abrams in Lone Tree.  Gary owned and operated Smothers Insurance in Lone Tree, Iowa City and Coralville and was the Secretary for Lincoln Mutual for over 40 years.

Jerold will be deeply missed by his wife, Sue Smothers of Lone Tree; his children, Gale Koven and her husband, Robert of Marietta, Georgia, Gwen Thompson and her husband, Ward of San Diego, California, and Bart Smothers and his wife, Connie of Iowa City; grandchildren, Megan Dotson and her husband, Jeremy, Corey King and her husband, Joey, Bobby Koven and his wife, Rachel and Matt Koven and his wife, Jacqueline; three great grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna Dotson and Isabelle Koven; one brother, Berle Smothers and his wife, Margaret of Sumner, Iowa and sister-in-law, June Smothers of Martelle.

Jerold was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary “Mike” Smothers; six brothers, twin brother, Jerome; Wilfred, Lowell, Robert, William and Marion and one sister, Kathleen Dougherty.
