Mary Lou and I had many great memories over the years. My memories of Mary Lou go back to when I was in high school 20 years ago- I grew up across the street from Mary Lou. When Mary Lou had her knees replaced, I stayed with her for a few days to help her around the house and to help her with the exercises. This is when we got to know to each other and became close.
Mary Lou loved to share her stories of her years as a nurse and instructor in Chicago. She was also passionate about Iowa Woman’s Basketball- her and I went to a game or two back in the day. Mary Lou loved sharing her knowledge and deep roots to Lone Tree. She often filled me in on what was happening with the historical society and museum. Mary Lou and I had long discussions about political issues, sometimes agreeing and sometimes disagreeing.
One of my favorite memories was our road trip that we took together. We left Lone Tree heading for Branson but we made many stops along the way. We stopped to see a relative of hers in Illinois, which wasn't exactly on the most direct route from Lone Tree to Branson but she wanted to see her relative and we were having fun. We saw a couple shows in Branson and enjoyed the town.
I could sit and visit with Mary Lou for hours listening to her stories. I moved away from Lone Tree but still came back to visit Mary Lou quite often on the weekends. I learned a lot from Mary Lou over the years and I will never forget the memories we shared. I do regret not having the time to come back and visit Mary Lou these last few years.
