Obituary of Shirley "Sue" Smothers

Shirley A. “Sue” Smothers, 84, of Lone Tree, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery.   Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the United Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree.  Online condolences for the Smothers family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com. 

Shirley Ann Abrams was born on January 21, 1934, in Lone Tree, Iowa the daughter of Doug W. and Myrt J. (Barcus) Abrams. Sue was a 1952 graduate of Lone Tree High School.  On December 21, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage to Jerold “Gary” R. Smothers in Lone Tree.  Sue had worked as an executive secretary in the trust department at First National Bank of Iowa City and later went to work as Senior Vice President at the Smothers Insurance offices in Iowa City and Lone Tree.  She was a member of Lone Tree Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon.  Sue was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and the American Business Women’s Association.   She volunteered at Lone Tree Schools and enjoyed painting, crocheting and traveling.

Sue will be deeply missed by her children, Gale Koven and her husband, Robert of Marietta, Georgia, Gwen Thompson and her husband, Ward of San Diego, California, and Bart Smothers and his wife, Connie of Iowa City; grandchildren, Megan Dotson and her husband, Jeremy, Corey King and her husband, Joey, Bobby Koven and his wife, Rachel and Matt Koven and his wife, Jacqueline; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna Dotson and Isabelle Koven. 

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gary on December 7, 2017; son, Gary “Mike” Smothers; and two sisters, Diana Jarrard and Laverne “Vernie” Dovorak.
