Lucile Helen Schaapveld passed away on Sunday, August 5 at The Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County, Iowa City, Iowa.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 8 from 4-7 pm at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree.  Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 9 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery.  Following the committal service, a time of fellowship will be held at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lone Tree First Responders or The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County. Lucile was born in her parent’s home, two miles East of Lone Tree, IA to Frank Ernest and Stella Ann (Owens) Krueger on November 20, 1919. She was the middle child between her older brother, Howard and younger sister, Dorothy.  Lucile attended Pleasant Plain School, south of the family farm and graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1937.  She received her Cosmetology license in April, 1945, from Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids.  On May 7, 1945, she was united in marriage to Eugene Bernard Schaapveld at Evangelical and Reformed Church of Lone Tree, IA.   They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary before Gene passed away in June, 1999.

In West Liberty, Gene and Lucile owned and operated Gene’s Standard Service Station as well as Lucile’s Beauty Shop, that she operated out of her home.  After 42 years of fixing hair and giving manicures, Lucile closed her shop in 1987 when they moved to Lone Tree to be near their daughter, Janet and family.  They also enjoyed many winters with their 5th wheel camper in McAllen, TX.

Lucile and Gene enjoyed attending dances, playing cards and traveling.  They visited all 50 states and had made one trip to Europe.  At age 92, she traveled to San Francisco, with Janet and Ryan, to spend Thanksgiving with Aaron.   At age 93 1/2, she and Janet flew to California to spend Mother’s Day with Aaron, in Reno and Lake Tahoe.  Lucile and Gene were avid Hawkeye fans, following them to many away football games, as well as the Gator Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Rose Bowl (twice).  Lucile watched all Hawkeye football and basketball games as well as the Chicago Cubs games.  She was thrilled to be able to attend a game at Wrigley Field in 2016, when they became the World Series Champions, and again in 2017, at age 97.  She took pride in working with her flowers and maintaining her home and yard.  Lucile’s greatest joy though, came from talking and spending time with Ryan, Aaron and Kinslee.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter Janet and husband, Dave Luedtke of Lone Tree and her grandsons, Ryan Luedtke and Aaron Luedtke and great grand-daughter, Kinslee Luedtke of North Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Howard (Lena) Krueger; and sister, Dorothy (Art) Lenz.
