Obituary of Loren "Cannon" Knebel

Loren F. “Cannon” Knebel, 79, longtime resident of Riverside, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at his home.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside.  Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.  Following committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the St. Mary’s Parish Center.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Riverside First Responders in memory of Cannon.  Online condolences for the family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Loren Francis Knebel was born on September 24, 1939, in Riverside, Iowa the son of Zeno F. and Irene Mary (Gerot) Knebel.  He was a 1958 graduate of St. Mary’s High School.  Loren married the love of his life, DeAnn R. Watkinson on August 31, 1960 at St. Mary’s Church in Riverside, where they started their 58 year journey together.  For over 32 years, Cannon was employed at the University of Iowa.

Many things brought joy to Cannon’s life,  He especially loved going to Car Shows and showing off his classic cars, riding his lawn mowers mowing several yards, gardening, taking vacations riding his motorcycle.  Cannon could fix any and everything, if he couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed.  One of his enjoyments was to build many Christmas presents for grandkids.

 Cannon will be deeply missed by his wife, DeAnn of Riverside; his children, Larry (Janet) Knebel of Hills and Lisa (Brian) Rummelhart of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Jacob Rummelhart, Kelly Rummelhart and her fiancé, Houston Herrald and Eric Knebel; two brothers, Dick Knebel of Iowa City and Harley (Carole) Knebel of Falmouth, Massachusetts; two sisters, Shirley Slaughter of Iowa City and Liela (Wayne) Horak of Iowa City; mother-in-law, Dorothy Watkinson of Riverside and many nieces and nephews.

Cannon was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Carol Knebel, Dorothy “Dottie” Krantz, and Thelda Hill; brother, Teddy Knebel and his father-in-law, Walter Watkinson.
