Obituary of Richard H Turner

Richard H. Turner 80, of Letts, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Letts United Methodist Church.  Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with military rites. Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services.  Memorials have been established for the Letts United Methodist Church, Letts Fire Department and Washington County Hospice in Richard’s name.  Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com

 

Richard Harvey Turner was born on October 28, 1938 in Muscatine County, Iowa, the son of D. Herald and Esther Gertrude (Harvey) Turner.  Richard was a 1957 graduate of Letts High School.  On June 12, 1960, he was united in marriage to Sharon Umbdenstock in Mechanicsville, Iowa.  Richard served his country in the United States Army from 1961 until 1963. He retired from Hon Industries after 33 years of service and 15 years of service with Hy-Vee Home Healthcare.  Richard was a member of Letts United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, was secretary and Past Exalted Ruler of BPO Elks Lodge 304 of Muscatine; Past District Deputy of Iowa Elks and Davenport Elks Lodge #298.  He was a chartered member of the Grandview-Letts Lions Club for 36 years and served as District Governor in 2003-2004, in 2010-2011 he received the Lions International President Award.  Richard also served as a trustee of Cedar Township for several years, Letts Fire Board for 37 years and was very involved with Letts Cub Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering and especially spending time with his grandchildren.  He will be remembered for always having a smile on his face and a helping hand to all. 

 

Richard will be deeply missed by his wife, Sharon of Letts; children, Mike (Kim) Turner of Solon, IA, Debra (Robert) Shumate of Oklahoma City, OK and Nancy Turner of Letts; grandchildren, David (fiancé, Erin Guzman) Turner of Nashville, TN, Cash Turner of Solon, Emily Davis, Nicholas Shumate and John Shumate, all of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Frances (Calvin) Robinson of Mechanicsville and nieces and nephews.  

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Robert Oxley and niece, Kristen Oxley.
