Obituary of Ruth A. Hurlbut

Ruth A. Hurlbut, 80, of Muscatine, died Thursday, November 3, 2005, at her home in Muscatine. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 5, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Rev. Richard Sebeniecher of New Hope United Methodist Church will officiate. Casketbearers will be Ron Carpenter, Tom Carpenter, Tom Whitlow, Matt Whitlow, Wade Eagle and Bradley Harrison. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation for Ruth will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2005 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Unity Hospice. Hurlbut was born April 15, 1925 in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of John and Ida M. (Viner) Carpenter. Ruth was united in marriage to James Harrison, he was killed during WWII, she then married Merle E. Hurlbut in 1947 in Iowa City, Iowa. Ruth was employed as a bartender at the Pit Stop for six years. Ruth was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and the Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed going to the river boats, playing cards and dominoes, fishing and golfing with her husband and sports car rallies. She also loved cooking for her family. Ruth will be deeply missed by two sons, Larry Harrison and his wife, Linda and Gary Harrison and his wife, Ann both of Muscatine; one son-in-law, Tom Whitlow and his wife, Linda of Muscatine; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Carpenter and his wife, Elizabeth of Muscatine; and two sisters, Mary Jane Carter of West Liberty and Hazel Bierman of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, one daughter Debra J. (Hurlbut) Whitlow and two brothers, Roy Carpenter and John Carpenter.
